Overview: WhatsApp images not showing in gallery is a settings or permissions issue in almost every case. The two most likely causes are Media Visibility being switched off inside WhatsApp or the app lacking the storage permission it needs to write files to your device. Both take under a minute to fix. This guide covers nine solutions for Android and iPhone, ordered from most to least likely, so you resolve the issue in the fewest steps possible.
For businesses sending image-based campaigns on WhatsApp, gallery visibility is a device-level issue that operates independently from your outbound send flow. If reaching a large contact list is also part of your workflow, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool manages outbound image sends from your browser without any dependency on your gallery settings. The two are separate functions. This guide is focused on getting received images to appear in your device gallery.
Five things consistently cause this. The Media Visibility setting is off inside WhatsApp. The app does not have the storage or photos permission your device requires. The device is running low on available space. The gallery app has not yet indexed the WhatsApp media folder after new images arrived. Or a .nomedia file is sitting inside the WhatsApp media directory and instructing the gallery to skip it entirely. Outdated app versions and a corrupted cache are less frequent causes but worth checking when the main fixes do not resolve the issue. This is a local device and settings problem, not a message delivery problem. If messages are also failing to reach recipients, that is a separate issue covered in our guide on why your WhatsApp messages are not being delivered.
The single most common cause. WhatsApp includes a toggle that controls whether incoming media is automatically written to your device. When this toggle is off, received images stay inside the app and never reach your gallery, regardless of how much storage space is available.
Android:
iPhone:
Result: All incoming images from this point save to your gallery automatically. Images that arrived while the setting was off can be found inside WhatsApp at Internal storage > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Images using a file manager.
Per-chat visibility: Media Visibility can also be controlled at the individual chat level. If images from one specific contact are missing but others are fine, open that chat, tap the contact name at the top, and check whether Media visibility is turned off for that conversation only.

If Media Visibility is on and images are still absent, WhatsApp may not be downloading them at all. Auto-download settings control whether images load automatically on mobile data, Wi-Fi, or both.
Android:
iPhone:
Result: WhatsApp downloads photos automatically on the connection types you specify. Those images then save to your gallery as long as Media Visibility is also switched on.
Without the correct storage or photos permission, WhatsApp has no way to write incoming images to your device. Every received image stays locked inside the app and is invisible to your gallery.
Android:
iPhone:
Result: WhatsApp can now write images to your device. The next image you receive will appear in your gallery. For a full guide on how WhatsApp permissions and data access interact with your business account settings, see our guide on how to secure your WhatsApp business chats.
Android 13 and 14 note: Android 13 replaced the older Storage permission with a more specific Photos and Videos permission. If you recently updated your Android version and images stopped saving, this change is the most likely cause. Recheck it at Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions.

A full or near-full device cannot accept new files. WhatsApp delivers the image to the chat conversation, but there is no space on the device to write it to the gallery. The image appears inside WhatsApp but never saves externally.
Android and iPhone:
Target at least 500MB of free space as a baseline for WhatsApp media saving to work reliably.
Quick check: If free storage is under 500MB, start here before trying any other fix. Storage is the most overlooked cause and takes the least effort to confirm.
The gallery app scans media folders on a schedule, not instantly. Recently downloaded WhatsApp images may exist on your device but have not yet been picked up by the gallery. A manual refresh forces an immediate scan.
Android:
iPhone:
Result: The gallery rescans all media folders and displays WhatsApp images that were already downloaded but not yet visible.
Temporary data in the WhatsApp cache can interfere with how the app saves incoming media. Clearing the cache removes this temporary data without touching your messages, chats, or any saved files.
Android:
iPhone does not have an equivalent cache-clearing option for WhatsApp. iPhone users should move directly to Fix 7.
Result: WhatsApp relaunches with a clean temporary state. No messages or files are lost in this process.

Bugs in older app versions can affect how WhatsApp writes media to device storage. An update patches these without requiring any changes to your account or settings.
Android:
iPhone:
Result: The most current version with the latest media-handling code is installed.
A .nomedia file placed inside the WhatsApp media folder acts as a direct instruction to your gallery: do not index this folder. Images are written to the folder correctly, but the gallery is told to ignore them entirely and shows nothing. This file can appear after certain WhatsApp updates, file manager operations, or system-level changes to the folder structure.
Android:
The .nomedia issue is specific to Android. WhatsApp on iPhone does not create or use this file. iPhone users who reach this step without a resolution should move to Fix 9.
If you can confirm that images exist inside the WhatsApp > Media folder using a file manager but they do not appear in the gallery, the .nomedia file is the cause. It is the only issue that produces that exact symptom.
Result: The gallery can now index the WhatsApp media folder and display its images.
If none of the eight fixes above resolve the issue, reinstalling clears all app-level configuration and removes any corrupted settings that may be preventing media from saving. Take a chat backup before proceeding.
Android:
iPhone:
Result: A fresh installation with default settings. All media already saved to your gallery before the reinstall is unaffected.
In short: Fix 1 (Media Visibility) and Fix 3 (Storage Permission) solve the problem for most users in under two minutes. If those do not work, check Fix 4 (storage space) and Fix 8 (.nomedia file) before moving to anything more involved.
If all nine fixes produce no change, the cause is likely specific to your device hardware, the operating system build, or an account-level configuration issue. Three steps to take next:
