Overview: How to see archive chat in WhatsApp takes two taps from the main chat list. Archived chats are not deleted — they are hidden from your main list and stored in a separate folder you can open at any time. This guide covers how to open archived chats on Android, iPhone, and WhatsApp Web, how to archive and unarchive a chat on each platform, and how one setting controls whether archived chats stay hidden or automatically return to your main list when a new message arrives.

For businesses managing client conversations on WhatsApp, archiving keeps the active chat list organized without losing any message history. For outbound campaigns to contacts outside your existing chats, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool handles that separately from your inbox. Archive management and outbound messaging are two distinct WhatsApp functions. This guide covers archive management only.

What WhatsApp Archive Does and Does Not Do

WhatsApp Archive hides a chat from your main conversation list and moves it into a separate Archived folder. The chat remains fully intact: all messages, media, and files are preserved. The other person or group cannot tell their chat has been archived. Archiving does not free up storage space. It does not delete any data. The only change is where the chat appears in your WhatsApp interface. The Archived folder is always accessible, and any archived chat can be unarchived instantly.

Archive hides a chat. Delete removes it permanently. If you are unsure which to use, archive it.

How to See Archive Chat in WhatsApp

The Archived section is accessible from the main Chats tab on all platforms. Its exact position on screen varies between WhatsApp versions, which is why some users cannot find it immediately.

Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
  2. Look for the Archived section. On most current versions it appears at the top of the chat list, just below the search bar. On some older versions it appears at the very bottom after scrolling down past all chats.
  3. Tap Archived.
  4. All archived chats appear in the list. Tap any chat to open and read it.

iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Chats at the bottom of the screen.
  2. If you are inside a chat, tap the back arrow to return to the chat list.
  3. Swipe down on the chat list to reveal the Archived section at the top.
  4. Tap Archived.
  5. All archived conversations are listed here. Tap any to open it.

WhatsApp Web and Desktop

  1. Open WhatsApp Web at web.whatsapp.com or launch the WhatsApp desktop app.
  2. In the left panel, look for the Archived section at the top of the chat list.
  3. Click Archived to open the folder and view all archived chats.
  4. Alternatively, click the three dots (menu) at the top of the left panel and select Archived.

If you are not yet logged in to WhatsApp Web, see our step-by-step guide on WhatsApp Web login before following the steps above.

If Archived is not visible: The section only appears when at least one chat has been archived. If you have never archived a chat, the folder does not show. Archive a chat using the steps in the next section and the Archived folder will appear immediately.

How to Archive Chats in WhatsApp

Archiving a chat removes it from your main chat list and places it in the Archived folder. The steps differ by platform.

Android

Method 1 (long-press):

  1. Open the Chats tab.
  2. Long-press the chat you want to archive.
  3. Tap the Archive icon (a down arrow into an inbox tray) that appears in the toolbar at the top of the screen.

Method 2 (swipe):

  1. Swipe right on the chat.
  2. Tap the Archive icon that appears on the left side.

iPhone

Method 1:

  1. Swipe left on the chat you want to archive.
  2. Tap Archive.

Method 2 (quick swipe):

  • Swipe all the way to the left in one fast motion until the chat disappears. It is archived immediately without a confirmation tap.

WhatsApp Web and Desktop

Method 1 (hover):

  1. Hover over the chat in the left panel.
  2. Click the three dots that appear on the right side of the chat row.
  3. Select Archive chat.

Method 2 (right-click):

  1. Right-click the chat in the left panel.
  2. Select Archive chat from the context menu.

Archive vs Delete: Archive hides the chat and keeps all messages. Delete permanently removes the chat and all its messages. Archive if you want to clean up your list but may need the conversation later. Delete only if you are certain the history is no longer needed.

How to Unarchive a Chat in WhatsApp

Android

  1. Open the Archived section.
  2. Long-press the chat you want to unarchive.
  3. Tap the Unarchive icon (an up arrow out of an inbox tray) in the top toolbar.
  4. The chat returns to your main chat list immediately.

iPhone

  1. Open the Archived section.
  2. Swipe left on the chat you want to unarchive.
  3. Tap Unarchive.
  4. The chat returns to your main chat list.

WhatsApp Web and Desktop

  1. Click Archived in the left panel.
  2. Hover over the archived chat.
  3. Click the three dots that appear.
  4. Select Unarchive.
  5. The chat returns to your main chat list.

In short: Tap Archived in the Chats tab to see hidden chats. Long-press or swipe to archive. Open Archived and long-press or swipe to unarchive. The steps work identically for individual chats and group chats.

The Keep Chats Archived Setting

This is the setting most users do not know exists, and it explains the single most common frustration with WhatsApp Archive: archived chats reappearing in the main list.

By default, WhatsApp moves an archived chat back to the main list as soon as a new message arrives in it. You archive a contact to reduce clutter, they send you a message, and the chat is back at the top of your list. The Keep Chats Archived setting changes this behavior.

When Keep Chats Archived is on, archived chats stay in the Archived folder regardless of new messages. Notifications still arrive for new messages. The chat just does not move back to your main list until you unarchive it manually.

Android:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu in the top right.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Chats.
  4. Toggle Keep chats archived on.

iPhone:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Chats.
  3. Toggle Keep chats archived on.

For businesses managing large numbers of client conversations, combining Archive with the Keep Chats Archived setting keeps the active inbox limited to conversations requiring immediate attention. Frequently asked questions

The Archived section only appears in the chat list when at least one chat has been archived. If you have never archived a chat, the section does not show. If you believe you have archived chats but still cannot find the section, check both the top and the bottom of the chat list, as the location varies between WhatsApp versions. On iPhone, swipe down on the chat list to reveal it at the top.
