Overview: Reporting a contact on WhatsApp sends a complaint to WhatsApp's trust and safety team along with the last 5 messages from the conversation. The reported person is never notified. Blocking cuts off all contact immediately, they cannot message you, call you, or see your profile. You can do both at the same time using "Report and Block." This guide covers how to report on Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web, and for groups, what actually happens after a report, and the key privacy features in WhatsApp 2026 that complement blocking and reporting.

For businesses managing WhatsApp outbound campaigns, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool with built-in anti-ban pacing reduces spam reports from recipients, the key risk for businesses using WhatsApp for outreach.

Report vs Block: What Each Action Does

Report and Block are two separate actions that serve different purposes. Understanding the difference prevents confusion about what happens after you take each one.

Feature

Report Only

Block Only

Can they still message you?

Yes, reporting alone does not stop messages

No, they cannot send messages or calls

Can they see your profile photo?

Yes

No

Are they notified?

No, report is anonymous

No, block is silent

What does WhatsApp receive?

Last 5 messages + account details, reviewed by trust team

Nothing, block is local to your device only

Effect on their account?

WhatsApp may warn, suspend, or ban if violations found

No effect on their WhatsApp account

Reversible?

No, you cannot unreport (but the report has no direct action on you)

Yes, you can unblock at any time

Best use case

Spam, scams, illegal content, harassment you want WhatsApp to investigate

Any contact you simply do not want to hear from

When to use both: For spam, scams, and harassment, use Report and Block together. WhatsApp receives the complaint AND you stop receiving messages immediately. The option to do both simultaneously appears automatically after you tap Report.

How to Report a Contact on WhatsApp on Android

Method 1 - From within a chat:

  • Open WhatsApp and go to the chat with the contact you want to report.
  • Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Report.
  • A prompt appears. You can choose to report only, or to also block the contact and delete the chat. Select your preference.
  • Tap Report to confirm.

Method 2 - Block and report together:

  • Open the chat > three-dot menu > More > Block.
  • A confirmation dialog appears with an option to also report the contact. Check "Report contact" before confirming.
  • Tap Block. The contact is blocked and the report is submitted simultaneously.

Method 3 - From the contact's profile:

  • Open the chat > tap the contact's name at the top.
  • Scroll down on their profile page.
  • Tap Report and follow the prompts.

How to Report a Contact on WhatsApp on iPhone

Method 1 - From a chat:

  • Open the chat with the contact you want to report.
  • Tap the contact's name at the top of the chat.
  • Scroll down on the profile page.
  • Tap Report Contact.
  • Choose to report only, or report and block. Tap Report to confirm.

Method 2 - Block and report from chat menu:

  • Open the chat > tap the contact's name.
  • Scroll down and tap Block Contact.
  • A dialog appears with the option to also report. Select it if applicable.
  • Tap Block to confirm.

How to Report on WhatsApp Web and Desktop

  • Open WhatsApp Web (web.whatsapp.com) or the Desktop app.
  • Click on the chat with the contact you want to report.
  • Click the three-dot menu icon in the top right of the chat window.
  • Click Contact Info (or More) > scroll down to find the Report option.
  • Select your reason for reporting and confirm.
  • You can choose to block as well during the same flow.

WhatsApp Web report works the same: The report submits the last 5 messages and account details to WhatsApp's trust team regardless of whether you report from mobile or Web. The outcome and anonymity are identical.

How to Report a WhatsApp Group

Reporting a group works slightly differently from reporting an individual contact. When you report a group, WhatsApp receives the group's recent messages and admin details for review.

On Android:

  • Open the group chat.
  • Tap the three-dot menu > More > Report.
  • A prompt asks whether you want to report only (stay in the group while it is reviewed) or Report and Exit (leave the group and submit the report).
  • Choose your option and confirm.

On iPhone:

  • Open the group chat > tap the group name at the top.
  • Scroll down on the group info page.
  • Tap Report Group.
  • Choose Report or Report and Exit.

Report and Exit vs Report only (groups): "Report and Exit" leaves the group immediately and submits the report. "Report" submits the complaint while you remain in the group, WhatsApp monitors it for violations. If the group is actively sharing illegal or harmful content, Report and Exit removes you immediately.

What Happens When You Report and Block on WhatsApp

When you report: WhatsApp receives the last 5 messages from your conversation with that contact, along with the contact's account details (user ID, message timestamps, message types). The report is reviewed by WhatsApp's trust and safety team. The outcome depends on whether a policy violation is confirmed.

Possible outcomes of a report:

  • No action, if no policy violation is found, the account receives no penalty.
  • Warning, the account is notified of a terms of service concern.
  • Temporary suspension, the account is restricted from sending messages for a period.
  • Permanent ban, if the violation is serious or the account has received multiple reports confirming a pattern of abuse.

What you will NOT receive: WhatsApp does not notify you of the outcome. Your report is processed anonymously. Not knowing the result does not mean no action was taken, WhatsApp processes and prioritises reports, particularly from accounts that receive multiple complaints for the same behaviour.

When you block: The contact immediately loses the ability to message you, call you, or see your profile photo, last seen, or status updates. From their side, messages they send show a permanent single grey tick, delivered to WhatsApp servers but never to your device. They receive no notification that they have been blocked.

What Happens to Your Chat When You Block Someone

Blocking someone does not delete the chat on your end. The previous messages remain in your WhatsApp chat list exactly as they were. If you want to delete the conversation, long-press the chat and select delete separately. How to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp covers the 5 signs that confirm a block, useful when you suspect you have been blocked by someone and want to confirm it.

On the other person's side, they still have the conversation on their device. Any messages they try to send you after being blocked show a single grey tick permanently, the message left their device but was never delivered to yours. The conversation stays visible to them as it was.

How to Unblock Someone on WhatsApp

On Android:

  • Open WhatsApp > tap the three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy > Blocked contacts.
  • Tap the name of the person you want to unblock.
  • Tap Unblock. They can now send you messages and calls again.

On iPhone:

  • Open WhatsApp > Settings > Privacy > Blocked.
  • Tap the contact's name.
  • Tap Unblock Contact.

Messages sent while blocked are lost: When you unblock someone, you do not receive any messages they sent during the blocked period. Only new messages sent after the unblock arrive on your device.

Can You Unreport Someone on WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp does not have an "unreport" or "withdraw report" feature. Once a report is submitted, it is sent to WhatsApp's trust and safety team and you cannot recall it.

However, this has no direct negative effect on you. Reports only affect the reported account if WhatsApp's review finds a policy violation. If you reported someone by mistake, the impact is minimal unless the reported account has a genuine violation history.

If you also blocked the person and want to restore contact, unblocking them through Blocked Contacts in Settings is still possible at any time regardless of whether you reported them.

WhatsApp Privacy Features That Complement Reporting (2026)

Beyond reporting and blocking, WhatsApp added several privacy controls in 2025 and 2026 that reduce unwanted contact before it reaches the point of needing a report. Securing your WhatsApp business chats covers the full account-level privacy configuration for WhatsApp Business accounts in particular.

Feature

What It Does

Silence Unknown Callers

Automatically silences WhatsApp calls from numbers not in your contacts. Calls do not ring. Available in Settings > Privacy > Calls.

Chat Lock

Locks specific chats behind fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN. Locked chats are hidden from the main list. Notifications do not show message content.

Advanced Chat Privacy

Prevents the other person from exporting your chat, auto-downloading your media, or letting third-party apps read your messages. Available per conversation in chat settings.

View Once + Screenshot blocking

Media sent as View Once disappears after one opening. On supported devices, the recipient cannot screenshot the content.

IP Address Protection for Calls

Routes WhatsApp calls through WhatsApp servers so the other person cannot see your IP address or estimate your location. Slight reduction in call quality on slow connections.

All of these features are in WhatsApp Settings > Privacy. Update WhatsApp to the latest version to access all controls listed above.

Conclusion

Reporting a WhatsApp contact submits a complaint to WhatsApp's trust and safety team with the last 5 messages, the person is never notified and cannot see that a report was filed. Blocking stops all contact immediately, messages, calls, and profile visibility, with no notification to the blocked person either. For most spam and harassment situations, doing both simultaneously (Report and Block) is the most effective response.

Groups can be reported with the option to exit at the same time. WhatsApp's 2026 privacy features, Silence Unknown Callers, Chat Lock, Advanced Chat Privacy, and IP Address Protection, provide proactive controls that reduce unwanted contact without requiring a report.

Frequently asked questions

Reporting submits a complaint to WhatsApp's trust and safety team with the last 5 messages from the conversation and the contact's account details. WhatsApp reviews it and may warn, suspend, or permanently ban the account if a policy violation is confirmed. Blocking simultaneously stops the contact from messaging you, calling you, or seeing your profile -- immediately and silently. Neither action notifies the person you reported or blocked.
