Overview: WhatsApp Communities is a feature that lets you organise multiple WhatsApp groups under one umbrella structure. Introduced in November 2022, it gives organisations -- schools, companies, housing societies, and clubs -- a way to link related sub-groups, manage them from a single admin panel, and send announcements to everyone at once through a dedicated Announcement Group. This guide covers what WhatsApp Communities is, what it is used for, how it differs from a regular group, how to create and join one, and when a Community is the right structure for your needs.
WhatsApp Communities organise inbound group communication. For outbound sends -- campaigns, promotions, and bulk announcements to a full contact list -- a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool handles that from a browser separately. This guide covers the Community feature only.
A WhatsApp Community is a structure that links multiple WhatsApp groups together under one roof. Think of it as a parent container: the Community sits at the top, and all the individual groups you create or link are organised beneath it.
Every Community automatically includes an Announcement Group -- a special chat where only admins can send messages, but all Community members receive them. This gives admins a dedicated broadcast channel that reaches the entire Community without making it a two-way conversation.
Community members can see all linked sub-groups and choose which ones to join. Each sub-group remains a normal WhatsApp group with its own conversations, admins, and settings. The Community layer adds organisation above those groups -- it does not change how the groups themselves work.
Launched November 2022: WhatsApp Communities rolled out globally starting in November 2022. As of 2026, the feature is available to all WhatsApp users on Android, iPhone, and WhatsApp Web, and supports up to 50 sub-groups per Community with up to 5,000 members in the Announcement Group.
The core use is structured communication at scale. WhatsApp groups work well up to a point -- when you have 8 or 10 separate but related groups, managing them independently becomes messy. Communities solve that by giving all those groups a common home.
Organisation: All related groups appear in one place instead of scattered across a chat list. Members know where to find the relevant conversation.
Announcements: The Announcement Group reaches every member of the Community simultaneously. An important update, a school holiday notice, or an urgent company communication goes to everyone in one send -- no need to post in each sub-group separately.
Privacy across groups: A student in a class group cannot see the phone numbers of parents in a different class group, even if both groups are under the same school Community. Members of separate sub-groups are invisible to each other.
Admin efficiency: Community admins manage all linked groups from a single admin panel. They can remove members from the entire Community at once, add new sub-groups, and control settings across the structure without jumping between individual group settings.
Controlled joining: Members join sub-groups based on relevance. A company employee joins the department group and the social group, but not the HR group. The Community gives them visibility of what exists; they self-select from there.

The structural differences run deeper than size. The full business-specific analysis -- when a Community scales better, what the admin overhead difference looks like, and which works for client-facing communication -- is covered in WhatsApp Communities vs groups for business. The table below gives the feature-level view.
Feature | WhatsApp Group | WhatsApp Community |
Maximum members | Up to 1,024 members per group | Up to 5,000 in the Announcement Group; up to 50 sub-groups each with their own member limit |
Sub-groups | Not available | Up to 50 linked sub-groups under one community |
Announcement function | Admin can restrict who posts | Dedicated Announcement Group where only admins can send; all community members receive it |
Member privacy between groups | All group members see each other's numbers | Members of separate sub-groups cannot see each other's numbers |
Admin reach | Manages one group at a time | Manages all sub-groups plus the announcement channel from one place |
Structure | Flat -- one conversation thread | Hierarchical -- Announcement Group plus sub-groups |
Invitation | Group link or direct add by admin | Community invite link; members can browse and join sub-groups |
Best for | Small to medium teams, specific topics | Large organizations managing multiple related sub-groups |
Summary: Use a Group for a single, focused conversation. Use a Community when you need multiple related conversations that share members, need a common admin layer, or require a broadcast channel that reaches everyone at once.

Every Community includes an Announcement Group automatically. This group reaches all members of the Community -- including those who have not joined any sub-group -- but only admins can post messages in it. Regular members can read the announcements but cannot reply in the group.
The Announcement Group supports up to 5,000 members. For a school with 3,000 parent contacts, this is the channel for term start dates, exam results, or emergency notices. For a company, it is the company-wide communication channel.
Sub-groups are standard WhatsApp groups linked to the Community. They work exactly like any other WhatsApp group -- members can send messages, share media, and have two-way conversations. The only difference is they appear under the Community in the chat list. Within any sub-group, group admins retain all standard capabilities, including tagging everyone in a WhatsApp group when they need to reach all sub-group members simultaneously.
A Community supports up to 50 linked sub-groups. If you link an existing group to a Community, that group retains its existing members and history. You can also create new sub-groups from within the Community.
Community members can only see the phone numbers of people who share a specific sub-group with them. A parent in a Class 7A group cannot see or contact the parents from Class 8B, even though both groups are in the same school Community. This is a meaningful privacy improvement over giving everyone a single large group.
Community admins can: add or remove sub-groups from the Community, remove a member from the entire Community (not just one group), manage the Announcement Group, edit the Community name, description, and icon, and view a list of all linked groups and their member counts.
Creating a Community takes about two minutes and does not require any special account type.

iPhone:
Linking existing groups: You can only link groups where you are an admin. The group receives a notification that it has been linked to a Community. Existing group members and history are not affected.

There are two ways to join a Community: via an invite link or by being added by a Community admin.
Via invite link: The Community admin shares an invite link (similar to a group link). Tapping the link opens a preview of the Community. The person taps Join Community to accept.
Added by an admin: Community admins can add members directly. Added members receive a notification that they have been added to the Community and can see the Announcement Group immediately.
After joining the Community, members see the Announcement Group and a list of all linked sub-groups. They can browse the sub-groups and join the ones relevant to them. Joining the Community does not automatically add you to any sub-group.
Android: Open the Community. Tap the Community name at the top. Tap Add Groups. Choose an existing group where you are admin, or create a new one. Tap Add.
iPhone: Open the Community. Tap the Community name. Tap Add Group. Select an existing group or create a new one. Tap Add.
Groups added to a Community appear in the sub-groups list visible to all Community members. Members can choose to join any sub-group -- they are not automatically added.
Communities replace the manual juggling of 5 to 20 separate WhatsApp groups. Here is how different organisations use the structure.
Type | Without Community (separate groups) | With Community (structured) |
School / College | Parent group per class, student group, staff group, extracurricular clubs | Announcement group for all parents and students; sub-groups by class or subject |
Company / Office | Departmental teams, project groups, social channels | Announcement group for company-wide updates; sub-groups by department or team |
Housing Society | Floor groups, maintenance, events, committee | Announcement for all residents; sub-groups by wing or floor |
NGO / Club | Chapter groups, volunteer teams, donor updates | Announcement for all members; sub-groups by role or region |
Retail / Business | Customer segments, agent groups, vendor coordination | Announcement for promotions to all contacts; sub-groups by product category or region |
The common pattern across all use cases: the Announcement Group handles critical information for everyone, and sub-groups handle the day-to-day conversation within smaller, relevant clusters.

Announcement Group is admin-only: Members cannot reply in the Announcement Group. If you need two-way communication, you need a sub-group for it.
50 sub-group ceiling: Organisations with more than 50 active groups cannot fit them all into one Community. Multiple Communities or a different structure may be needed.
Admin burden: Setting up and maintaining a Community -- linking groups, managing removals, keeping sub-groups organised -- takes more administrative effort than a single group.
Not for outbound marketing: Communities organise existing member conversations. They are not designed for sending campaigns to contacts outside the Community or for reaching people who have not joined. For outbound sends to a full contact list, WhatsApp campaign software handles that function from a browser without requiring the contact to be in a group or Community.
No cross-Community analytics: WhatsApp does not provide read rates, click rates, or engagement data for Community announcements. You see only the message sent; tracking is not available within the app.
The question is not whether Communities are better -- it is whether the added structure is worth it for your situation.
Use a Group when: Your communication fits in a single conversation. Everyone in the conversation is relevant to each other. You have fewer than 1,024 active participants. The admin work for multiple groups does not exist yet.
Use a Community when: You manage 5 or more related WhatsApp groups and want them organised. You need a broadcast channel that reaches everyone simultaneously. Different sub-groups serve different member segments who should not see each other's contacts. You want members to self-select which sub-groups they join rather than being force-added to everything.
A single active group is better than a half-empty Community. Create a Community when the structure problem -- too many related groups, too scattered -- is already real.
WhatsApp Communities solves the organisation problem that comes with growing beyond a single group. The Announcement Group gives admins a broadcast channel that reaches everyone. Sub-groups let you segment conversations by role, class, department, or topic while keeping them under one roof. The privacy model ensures members of different sub-groups remain separated until they share a specific group.
The feature is worth setting up when the admin overhead of managing multiple separate groups has already become noticeable -- when members ask "which group was that in?" or when critical announcements get lost across five different threads.
