Overview: The WhatsApp Web QR code is a one-time scan that links your phone to a browser session on your computer. It expires every 60 seconds, appears automatically when you open web.whatsapp.com, and takes under 30 seconds to scan. This guide covers the exact steps for Android and iPhone, how to scan the QR code for Companion Mode on a second phone, the passkey login alternative that skips the QR scan entirely, and how to fix the most common scanning failures.
For businesses running outbound WhatsApp campaigns from the browser, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool handles those sends after the QR scan connects your account.
What You Want to Do | Quickest Path |
Scan QR code to open WhatsApp on a computer browser | Open web.whatsapp.com on your computer > scan the QR code with your phone > Android or iPhone steps below |
QR code expired or keeps refreshing | QR codes expire every 60 seconds. Click the circular refresh button on the QR code screen to get a new one. See the QR Code Expired section. |
Log in without scanning a QR code | Use Passkey login (supported on Android and iPhone with WhatsApp 2.24+). See the Passkey section below. |
Scan QR code to link a second phone to the same WhatsApp account | Use Companion Mode, separate from WhatsApp Web. Steps in the Companion Mode section below. |
QR code not scanning or WhatsApp Web not connecting | See the Troubleshooting section for 7 specific fixes. |
Log out of WhatsApp Web remotely from your phone | WhatsApp > Settings > Linked Devices > tap the session > Log Out. |
The WhatsApp Web QR code is a unique, encrypted code generated automatically when you open web.whatsapp.com or WhatsApp Desktop. Scanning it with your phone's WhatsApp app creates a secure, authenticated session between your phone and the browser or desktop app.
The QR code is temporary and unique to each session. It refreshes every 60 seconds for security, if you do not scan in time, a new one generates automatically. Each scan links that specific browser session to your WhatsApp account. You can have up to 4 linked devices active at any time.
The session is end-to-end encrypted. All messages that appear in the browser are synced from your phone, the browser shows the same conversations, not a separate inbox.

Keep the QR code fully visible: Hold your phone at about 20 to 30 centimetres from the screen. Too close or too far reduces scan accuracy. If your screen has glare, adjust the angle slightly or reduce screen brightness on the device showing the QR code.
For session management - keeping sessions alive, seeing which devices are connected, and logging out remotely, the WhatsApp Web login guide covers the full login and session lifecycle.
Note: On iPhone, the QR scanner opens within WhatsApp - not the standard iPhone camera app. Only the in-app QR scanner works for this. Do not use the iPhone camera app or a third-party scanner, they will not link to WhatsApp Web.

WhatsApp Desktop is a standalone app for Windows and Mac that works the same way as WhatsApp Web. The QR code appears when you open the app on a new device or after logging out.
WhatsApp Desktop works independently from WhatsApp Web, they are separate sessions and count as separate linked devices.
WhatsApp introduced Passkey login in 2024 as an alternative to QR code scanning. It allows you to log in to WhatsApp Web using your phone's biometric authentication (fingerprint or Face ID) without needing to scan a QR code at all.
How it works:
Requirements: Passkey login requires WhatsApp version 2.24 or later on Android or iPhone. Both your phone and computer must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or Bluetooth must be active. If you do not see the passkey option, update WhatsApp and try again.

Companion Mode is a different use of QR scanning, it links a second phone to your existing WhatsApp account, so both phones run the same account simultaneously. This is not the same as WhatsApp Web.

WhatsApp Web QR codes expire every 60 seconds. If you take too long to scan, the code goes stale and shows a circular reload icon.
Fix: Click the circular reload/refresh icon on the QR code screen. A new QR code generates immediately. Scan the new code. The process starts over from scratch, no other steps needed.
Why codes expire: The short expiry time is a security feature. A permanent QR code could be screenshot and used later to link an unauthorized device to your account. The 60-second window ensures the scan happens in real time, making unauthorized remote linking impossible.
If the QR code keeps expiring before you can scan: Your phone's camera may be slow to focus. Open WhatsApp and reach the Link a Device screen before the QR code appears on your computer. Once the camera is ready, generate the QR code on the computer and scan immediately. The 60-second timer starts when the code appears, not when you open WhatsApp.

Never scan the WhatsApp Web QR code on a public or shared computer without logging out when done. Anyone who sits at that computer after you can access your WhatsApp account if the session stays active.Always check "Keep me signed in": When you scan the QR code, a "Keep me signed in" checkbox may appear. On a personal computer: tick it. On a shared or public computer: leave it unticked. The unticked option logs out the session automatically when the browser closes.
Log out remotely from your phone: If you forget to log out: open WhatsApp on your phone > Settings > Linked Devices. You can see all active sessions including the browser that is still logged in, and tap Log Out next to it from anywhere.
WhatsApp Web is end-to-end encrypted: The session between your phone and the browser is encrypted. However, once the browser is open and connected, anyone with physical access to the computer can read your messages. The encryption protects data in transit, not the browser session itself.
Camera not scanning: Grant WhatsApp camera permission (Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Camera). A dirty camera lens can also prevent scanning, wipe it with a clean cloth.
QR code appears but scanning fails: Increase the brightness on your computer screen. The camera needs sufficient contrast to read the code. Reduce ambient glare by tilting the screen or adjusting room lighting. Keep 20 to 30 cm distance from the screen.
WhatsApp Web loads but goes blank or disconnects: Your phone and computer must both have active internet connections. If your phone's mobile data is weak, the session will drop. Connect your phone to Wi-Fi for a more stable session.
The scan succeeds but chats are not loading: Refresh the WhatsApp Web page (Ctrl+R on Windows, Cmd+R on Mac). If it continues, log out from Linked Devices on your phone, close the browser, and scan again.
WhatsApp says "Maximum devices linked": WhatsApp allows a maximum of 4 companion devices at once. Go to WhatsApp > Linked Devices, remove a session you no longer use, and then scan the QR code again.
QR code not appearing at web.whatsapp.com: Try a different browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari). Clear your browser cache and cookies. Disable any browser extensions that might block WhatsApp Web (VPNs and privacy extensions sometimes cause this).
WhatsApp app cannot find the Linked Devices option: Update WhatsApp to the latest version. On very old versions, the Linked Devices path was in a different menu. The current path is: three-dot menu > Linked Devices (Android) or Settings > Linked Devices (iPhone).
Scanning the WhatsApp Web QR code is a 30-second process: open web.whatsapp.com, go to Linked Devices on your phone, open the camera, and scan. Android users access this via the three-dot menu; iPhone users via Settings. If the QR code expires, click the reload icon for a new one. If you prefer to skip the camera scan entirely, Passkey login does the same job using your phone's biometric authentication.
For Companion Mode on a second phone, the process is different, the QR code appears on the companion phone and you scan it with your primary phone. For shared computers, always untick "Keep me signed in" and log out via Linked Devices on your phone when done.
For businesses running WhatsApp outbound campaigns after connecting via QR code, Roklo is a free bulk message sender that handles how to send bulk WhatsApp messages from your browser session, no API, no saved contacts, no per-message charge.
