Overview: The WhatsApp disappearing photos feature is called View Once. A photo, video, or voice message sent this way can be opened one time, then it disappears from the chat. It cannot be saved, forwarded, or starred, and current versions block screenshots. To send one, attach a photo, tap the "1" icon next to the caption box, and send. This guide covers how to send view once on WhatsApp on every device, what the recipient sees, the 14-day expiry rule, and the limits you should know before relying on it.
View Once is for one-to-one private sharing. For sending images to a whole customer list as a campaign, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool handles that from your browser, and that is a different job, covered briefly below.
Question | Answer |
What can be sent as View Once? | Photos, videos, and voice messages |
How many times can it be opened? | Once. It disappears when the recipient closes it. |
What if it is never opened? | It expires from the chat after 14 days |
Can it be saved, forwarded, or starred? | No |
Can it be screenshotted? | Blocked on current versions. Older app versions may still allow it. |
Will I know it was opened? | Only if the recipient has read receipts on. Status changes to Opened. |
Does it work in groups? | Yes, each member can open it once |
Is it encrypted? | Yes, end-to-end encrypted like all personal messages |
Open the chat you want to send to.
Tap the paperclip icon, then Gallery or Camera, and pick a photo or video.
In the preview screen, tap the "1" icon in a circle next to the caption box. A note confirms the photo is set to View Once.
Tap Send.
Result: the chat shows a "Photo" or "Video" bubble with the 1 icon, not a preview of the image.
Note: View Once is not a default setting. You must tap the 1 icon every time you want to send a one time photo.

Open the chat and tap the + icon next to the message box.
Choose Photo & Video Library, or tap the camera icon to take a new photo.
Select one photo or video.
Tap the "1" icon on the right of the caption field until it turns highlighted.
Tap the send arrow.
Result: the photo is sent as View Once and will disappear after the recipient opens it.
View Once works on one item at a time. If you select several photos, you need to send each one separately to use View Once.
Open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app and go to the chat.
Click the + or paperclip icon, then Photos & Videos, and choose a file.
In the preview, click the "1" icon next to the caption box.
Click Send.
Result: the photo arrives as View Once on the recipient's phone.
If the 1 icon is missing on Web or desktop, update the app or send the photo from your phone instead. View Once media you receive is generally opened on your phone, not on linked computers.

In a chat, press and hold the microphone icon, then slide up to lock recording.
Speak your message.
Tap the "1" icon that appears next to the send button.
Tap Send.
Result: the voice note plays once and then disappears from the chat.
The recipient sees a bubble labelled Photo, Video, or Voice message with a 1 icon, but no preview. When they tap it, the media opens full screen. Once they close it, the bubble changes to "Opened" and the content is gone.
On your side, the message also shows as Opened, but only if the recipient has read receipts turned on. If they have turned read receipts off, you will not see whether it was viewed. In groups, you can check Message info to see which members have opened it, again subject to their read receipt settings.
These two features are often confused. View Once controls one photo. Disappearing Messages controls a whole chat.
Feature | View Once | Disappearing Messages |
Applies to | One photo, video, or voice note | Every new message in the chat |
Disappears when | The recipient closes it | After 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days |
How to turn on | Tap 1 icon before sending | Chat info > Disappearing messages |
Can be saved | No | Recipient can save media before it disappears, unless blocked by settings |
Screenshot | Blocked on current versions | Not blocked |
Use View Once for a single sensitive image. Use Disappearing Messages when you want an entire conversation to clear itself over time.

No, not on a current version of WhatsApp. On iPhone, a screenshot attempt shows a "Screenshot blocked" message instead of the photo. On Android, the phone refuses to take the screenshot. Screen recordings show a black screen.
Two caveats matter. The sender is not notified when someone tries to screenshot. And someone could still photograph the screen with a second phone, or use an outdated app. Treat View Once as a strong privacy layer, not an absolute guarantee.
Rule: Never send anything as View Once that would cause real harm if it were saved. A determined person can still capture it with another camera.
No. Once you close a View Once photo, WhatsApp does not let you reopen it from the chat, and it is not saved to your gallery. Opened View Once media is also not included in backups, so restoring a backup will not bring it back.
The only exception: an unopened View Once photo is included in a backup made before it was opened. After it is opened, it is gone. Third-party apps that claim to recover View Once photos are a security risk and should be avoided.
For what can and cannot be recovered in normal chats, this guide on how to read deleted WhatsApp messages explains the limits.

Good uses: sharing an ID or address proof with a verified business, a Wi-Fi password, a bank detail screenshot, a private photo, or a quick reaction you do not want saved.
Not a good fit: anything the recipient needs to refer back to, such as invoices, tickets, or instructions. They will lose it after one look.
Need full quality instead? View Once photos are compressed like normal photos. If image quality matters more than privacy, sending the file as a document keeps it sharp.
Step by step, that method is in this guide on how to send photos as documents in WhatsApp.
For businesses: View Once is useful when a customer sends you sensitive proof, but it is a one-to-one tool. It is not built for sending product images or offers to many customers.
For that, Roklo sends image campaigns to your whole contact list from your browser, with each person's name in the message and a scheduled send time. Campaign messages are regular messages, not View Once, so customers can keep and revisit your offer.
The 1 icon is missing. Update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store. The icon only appears in the media preview screen.
You selected several photos. View Once works one item at a time. Send each photo separately.
Cannot open on WhatsApp Web. Open View Once media you received on your phone.
Media expired. If not opened within 14 days, the photo is removed. Ask the sender to send it again.
No "Opened" status. The recipient has read receipts turned off, so the status will not update for you.
Screenshot was possible. The other person may be on an old app version. Ask contacts to update before sharing sensitive content.
The WhatsApp disappearing photos feature, View Once, gives you a simple way to share something sensitive without leaving a copy in someone's gallery. Tap the 1 icon before sending, and the photo, video, or voice note disappears after a single viewing, with screenshots blocked on current versions.
It is not a perfect shield. Someone can still photograph the screen, and you will not be told if they try. Use it for genuinely private content, and use regular messages or documents for anything the recipient needs to keep.
For sending offers and images to a full customer list, Roklo works as a free bulk message sender from your browser.
