Overview: WhatsApp status privacy decides who sees the photos, videos, and text you post to your status for 24 hours. You have three options: My contacts, My contacts except, and Only share with. A person can only see your status if you have both saved each other's numbers and your privacy setting includes them. This guide shows how to change your status setting on Android, iPhone, and Web, how to hide your status from someone, how to view status without being seen, and why you might not see someone else's status.

Status only reaches people who open their Updates tab. For a business that needs to reach every customer directly, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool sends personalised messages to your list from your browser.

Who Can See Your WhatsApp Status?

Three conditions must all be true for someone to see your status:

  • You have saved their number in your phone contacts.
  • They have saved your number in their phone contacts.
  • Your status privacy setting includes them.

If either person has not saved the other, neither sees the other's status. This mutual-save rule is the most common reason a status is missing.

Situation

Can they see your status?

Both saved each other, allowed by your setting

Yes

Both saved each other, excluded by your setting

No

You saved them, but they have not saved you

No

They saved you, but you have not saved them

No

You have blocked them

No

Member of a group with you, but not saved

No

Important: Changing your status privacy only affects status updates you post after the change. Anything already posted keeps the audience it had when you shared it.

The 3 WhatsApp Status Privacy Options

Option

Who sees your status

Best for

My contacts

Everyone saved in your phone contacts

Default sharing with your whole list

My contacts except...

All contacts except the people you exclude

Hiding status from a few people

Only share with...

Only the contacts you select

Sharing with a small, chosen group

"Only share with" is the strictest WhatsApp status privacy setting. Anyone you add later to your contacts will not see your status until you add them to this list.

How to Change WhatsApp Status Privacy on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu in the top right.

  2. Tap Settings, then Privacy.

  3. Tap Status.

  4. Choose My contacts, My contacts except, or Only share with.

  5. If you picked one of the last two, select the contacts and tap the green tick.

Result: your next status updates are shown only to the audience you chose.

You can also reach this setting from the Updates tab: tap the three-dot menu at the top and choose Status privacy.

WhatsApp Status Privacy on iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings at the bottom right.

  2. Tap Privacy, then Status.

  3. Select My Contacts, My Contacts Except, or Only Share With.

  4. Choose the contacts if needed and tap Done.

Result: new status updates on your iPhone follow the setting you picked.

Shortcut: in the Updates tab, tap the three dots or the privacy option next to My Status to open Status privacy directly.

On iPhone, people can also see status-related content in notification previews. For more privacy on your lock screen, this guide on how to hide names on WhatsApp notifications on iPhone covers the settings.

How to Change Status Privacy on WhatsApp Web

  1. Open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.

  2. Click the Status (Updates) icon in the left sidebar.

  3. Click the three-dot menu, then Status privacy.

  4. Choose your option and select contacts if needed.

Result: the setting syncs to your phone and applies to new status updates from any device.

How to Change Privacy for One Status Only

You do not have to change your overall WhatsApp status setting to post one update to a smaller audience.

  1. Open the Updates tab and start a new status.

  2. Before posting, tap the audience label at the bottom, usually "Status (Contacts)".

  3. Choose My contacts except or Only share with for this update.

  4. Post the status.

Result: only this update uses the narrower audience. Your default setting stays the same.

How to Hide WhatsApp Status from Someone

To hide your WhatsApp status from someone without blocking them, use My contacts except:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Status.

  2. Tap My contacts except.

  3. Search for the person and select them.

  4. Tap the tick (Android) or Done (iPhone).

Result: that person no longer sees your future status updates. They are not notified.

Other ways to hide status from someone: delete their number from your contacts, or block them. Blocking also stops calls and messages, so use it only if you want to cut contact completely.

How to View WhatsApp Status Without Being Seen

There is one official way: turn off read receipts. When read receipts are off, your name does not appear in the viewer list of other people's status updates.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy.

  2. Turn off Read receipts.

Result: you can view status updates without appearing as a viewer.

The trade-off: With read receipts off, you also cannot see who viewed your own status, and people will not see blue ticks on messages you read. Read receipts in group chats are not affected.

The full steps, including what changes for blue ticks in chats, are in this guide on how to turn off blue ticks in WhatsApp.

Can I disable status views entirely? WhatsApp has no switch that hides your viewer list from you while keeping read receipts on. Turning off read receipts is the only way to stop status views from being recorded in both directions.

Avoid third-party apps that claim to let you view status secretly. Many are modified WhatsApp versions, which can get your number banned.

How to Mute Someone's Status

Muting hides a person's status from your main updates list without them knowing.

  1. Open the Updates tab.

  2. Long-press the person's status (Android) or swipe left on it (iPhone).

  3. Tap Mute.

Result: their status moves to a Muted section at the bottom of your Updates tab.

To unmute, open the Muted section, long-press or swipe on the status, and tap Unmute.

Why Can't I See Someone's WhatsApp Status?

They have not saved your number. You only see someone's status if they have saved you in their contacts.

They excluded you. They may use My contacts except or Only share with, and left you out.

You muted them. Check the Muted section at the bottom of the Updates tab.

They have not posted. Status updates disappear after 24 hours.

They blocked you. A missing status combined with no profile photo and no last seen can be a sign of a block.

Before assuming anything, check the other signs listed in this guide on how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp.

Status Privacy Tips for Businesses

Use a separate business number. Keep personal status updates off the number your customers have.

Save customer numbers, and ask customers to save yours. Status only works when both sides have saved each other, so leads who never saved your number will never see it.

Use Only share with for VIP offers. Post exclusive offers to a selected list of loyal customers.

Check your viewer list. Keep read receipts on if you want to see which customers are engaging with your status.

Status has a built-in limit for business: it only reaches contacts who have saved your number, whom you have saved, and who choose to open the Updates tab. To make sure every customer actually receives an offer, Roklo sends it as a personalised message to each person's chat from your browser, with no saved-contact requirement on the recipient's side.

Conclusion

WhatsApp status privacy comes down to two rules: you and the other person must have saved each other's numbers, and your setting must include them. Use My contacts except to hide status from a few people, Only share with for a small trusted list, and the per-status audience selector when you want one update to go to fewer people.

To view other people's status without being seen, turn off read receipts, accepting that you will lose your own viewer list. Remember that privacy changes only affect updates you post afterwards.

When a status is not enough to reach every customer, Roklo works as a free bulk message sender that delivers your message directly to each chat.
