Overview: WhatsApp new features in 2026 changed four things: how people find you (usernames), where you can call from (web calling in the browser), how many accounts you can run (two on iPhone), and how private your AI use is (Incognito Chat with Meta AI). This guide lists every major 2026 update by month, explains what each one does, and flags which ones matter for businesses. Most features roll out gradually, so the last section covers what to do if one is not showing on your phone yet.
One gap remains unchanged in 2026: WhatsApp still has no native way to send a personalised campaign to a large customer list. For that, businesses use a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool that runs from the browser. More on that in the business section.
Month | Feature | Useful for |
January | Member tags, text stickers, event reminders in groups | Communities, clubs, teams |
March | Two accounts on iPhone, iOS-to-Android chat transfer, Manage Storage, AI photo touch-ups, smarter Writing Help | Everyone, especially business owners |
May | Incognito Chat with Meta AI | Privacy-conscious users |
June | Meta Business Agent (global), username reservations open | Businesses, everyone |
July | Web calling, call transfer, waiting room, QuickHD, noise suppression, Muse Image | Remote teams, desktop users |
August | Account security update, multiple passkeys | Everyone |
Rollout note: WhatsApp releases most features gradually by country and device. A feature announced in March may reach some phones weeks later.
Released: Reservations opened June 29, 2026. Full rollout later in 2026.
A username of 3 to 35 characters lets people message you without seeing your phone number. Your number is still needed to register and stays tied to the account, but new contacts see only the username. There is no public username directory, so someone needs your exact handle to start a chat.
For business: Reserve your business name early to prevent impersonation. Once live, you can share a username on social media instead of a personal number.
Released: August 2026.
Passkeys let you log in with your fingerprint, face, or screen lock instead of an SMS code. You can now add more than one passkey per account, which helps if you use WhatsApp on several devices.
For business: Turn on passkeys for every business number. A hijacked business account means lost customer conversations.
Released: Launched 2025, expanded through 2026.
A per-chat setting that blocks chat exports, auto-downloading of media, and the use of messages in AI features. It does not block manual screenshots.
For business: Useful for sensitive client chats, such as healthcare, legal, or finance conversations.
For the full set of account and chat protections a business number should use, see this guide on securing your WhatsApp business chats.

Released: March 2026.
iPhone users can stay logged in to two WhatsApp accounts at once, as Android users already could. Your profile picture shows in the bottom tab so you always know which account you are in.
For business: Run your business number and personal number on one iPhone without a second phone.
Released: March 2026.
Chat transfer now moves your history, photos, and videos from iOS to Android in a few taps, not just within the same platform.
For business: Switching a team member's phone no longer means losing customer chat history.
Released: March 2026.
Tap the chat name, then Manage Storage, to find and delete large files without deleting the whole conversation. You can also clear only media when clearing a chat.
For business: Free up space on busy business phones while keeping the text record of every customer conversation.

You can give yourself a custom tag in each group that shows your role, such as "Store Manager" or "Batch Coordinator."
For business: Helpful in large customer or community groups, so members know who to ask.
Released: January 2026.
Type any word into Sticker Search to turn it into a sticker. When you send an event in a group, you can now set custom early reminders for invitees.
For business: Event reminders work well for webinars, workshops, and store events run through a group.
Released: Announced July 28, 2026. Rolling out gradually.
You can make and receive one-to-one and group voice and video calls directly in WhatsApp Web, with no desktop app needed. Calls include screen sharing, reactions, and a Calls tab with history and favourites. Group calls support up to 32 participants.
For business: Teams on shared or locked-down work computers can now take customer calls from the browser.
Released: July 2026.
Call Transfer moves an active call between phone, desktop, and browser without hanging up. Waiting Room lets hosts approve people joining by invite link. QuickHD starts video in high quality faster, and noise suppression cuts background sound.
For business: Waiting Room is useful for client calls shared by link. Noise suppression helps teams calling from shops or busy offices.

Meta AI can remove distractions, swap backgrounds, or apply a style to a photo before you send it. Writing Help can now draft a suggested reply based on the conversation.
For business: Quick product photo clean-ups and faster first drafts of replies. Always review AI drafts before sending to a customer.
Released: May 2026.
A temporary chat with Meta AI that runs in a secure environment, built on WhatsApp's Private Processing system, and disappears when the session ends.
For business: Lets owners ask AI about pricing or business decisions without that conversation being kept.
Released: July 2026, in a limited set of countries.
Generate and edit images directly in a chat with Meta AI.
For business: Quick visuals for offers or announcements, where available.
The biggest business-specific launch of 2026 was the Meta Business Agent, an AI assistant that answers customer messages automatically using your catalog, website, and past chats. It launched globally on June 3, 2026. The full breakdown of what it does, what it costs, and its limits is in this guide to Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp.
2026 feature | How a business can use it |
Usernames | Share a branded handle instead of a personal number |
Two accounts on iPhone | Keep business and personal chats separate on one device |
Web calling | Take customer calls from any browser, including shared computers |
Member tags and event reminders | Run cleaner customer communities and event groups |
Meta Business Agent | Automate answers to repeat inbound questions |
Passkeys | Protect the business number from takeover |

Several features launched in the second half of 2025 and are still reaching accounts, or are only now being adopted by businesses. They are worth knowing because many competitor lists present them as new.
Feature | What it does | Business use |
Message translations | Translate a message, or a whole chat on Android, into your language inside WhatsApp | Serve customers who write in Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, or other languages |
Live and Motion Photos | Send iPhone Live Photos and Android Motion Photos with movement and sound | Product demos and store walk-throughs feel more real than a still image |
Meta AI chat themes and video call backgrounds | Generate custom chat themes and call backgrounds with Meta AI | Branded backgrounds for client video calls |
Document scanning (Android) | Scan, crop, and send a document straight from the attachment menu | Send signed forms, invoices, and receipts without a separate scanner app |
Business Calling API (July 2025) | Lets API users add voice calls inside the same chat thread | Escalate a complex query from text to a call without losing context |
Per-message pricing (July 2025) | WhatsApp Business Platform moved from conversation-based to per-message pricing | API users should re-check their monthly messaging budget |
Note: The Business Calling API and per-message pricing apply to the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). They do not affect the free WhatsApp Business app.
Reserve your username now. Claim your business name before someone else does, even if the full rollout has not reached you.
Split work and personal chats. If you use an iPhone, add your business number as a second account instead of carrying two phones.
Secure every business number. Set up passkeys and two-step verification on each number your team uses.
Turn on translations for multilingual customers. It removes the need for a separate translation app during support chats.
Use AI as a first draft, not the final word. Writing Help and photo touch-ups speed things up, but review every AI draft before it reaches a customer.
Refresh your business profile. Update your catalog, hours, and description so new features like usernames point customers to accurate information.

For all the 2026 updates, a few gaps that matter to businesses are still open:
No scheduling in the standard app. You still cannot write a message today and set it to send at a future date and time.
Broadcast lists still cap at 256. Broadcasts also only reach contacts who have saved your number.
No name personalisation at scale. Native broadcasts and channels send identical text to everyone.
Workarounds for timed sends are covered in this guide on how to schedule messages on WhatsApp.
This is where Roklo fits alongside the 2026 features. It sends personalised campaigns from your browser to your full contact list, with each person's name, on a schedule you set. No WhatsApp Business API is required, and recipients do not need your number saved.
Update the app. On Android, update WhatsApp from the Google Play Store. On iPhone, update from the App Store. WhatsApp Web updates itself when you refresh the page.
Turn on automatic updates. Enable auto-update in your app store so new features arrive as soon as your phone is in the rollout.
Check What's New. Recent features often appear as prompts in the app, or under Settings for privacy and account features.

Gradual rollout. The most common reason. WhatsApp enables features in stages, so your account may get it days or weeks after the announcement.
Outdated app. Update WhatsApp and restart your phone. Some features need the latest version on both devices.
Region limits. Some Meta AI features, such as Muse Image, launch in selected countries first.
Device or platform. Some features reach Android, iPhone, and Web at different times.
Beta features. Features reported from beta builds may never launch, or may change before they do.
WhatsApp new features in 2026 were less about flashy additions and more about control: control over who sees your number, where you take calls, how many accounts you run, and what Meta AI keeps. For businesses, usernames, two accounts on iPhone, web calling, and the Meta Business Agent are the updates worth acting on first.
Several of the biggest features, including usernames, are still rolling out, so this guide is updated as new releases land. If a feature is not on your phone yet, update the app and give the rollout time.
For the gap 2026 did not close, personalised and scheduled campaigns to your customer list, Roklo works as a free bulk message sender from your browser.
