Overview: WhatsApp launched a built-in proxy feature in January 2023 to help users stay connected when WhatsApp is blocked or restricted by local governments or network providers. The proxy routes your WhatsApp connection through a volunteer-run server, bypassing the block without breaking end-to-end encryption. This guide covers what a WhatsApp proxy is, where to find a proxy address for free, how to enable the proxy settings on Android and iPhone step by step, what works and what does not work through a proxy, and how to fix the most common proxy connection problems.
For businesses managing WhatsApp outbound campaigns to a contact list, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool handles those sends separately from your proxy settings. This guide covers proxy setup for personal and business WhatsApp connectivity.
A WhatsApp proxy is an intermediary server that sits between your WhatsApp app and WhatsApp's servers. When you enable a proxy in WhatsApp settings, your app sends its traffic to the proxy server first, and that server forwards it to WhatsApp on your behalf. WhatsApp's servers see the proxy server's IP address instead of yours.
WhatsApp introduced this feature officially on January 5, 2023, in response to internet censorship events in Iran and other countries. End-to-end encryption is fully maintained through a proxy connection, the proxy operator cannot read your messages, see their content, or intercept them.
The three main reasons to use a WhatsApp proxy:
WhatsApp is blocked in your country: Countries including China, Iran, Syria, and Cuba restrict or fully block WhatsApp. A proxy lets you reach WhatsApp's servers by routing through a server in an unrestricted location.
WhatsApp is disrupted during a local network outage: During protests or civil emergencies, governments sometimes block specific apps without shutting down all internet. A proxy can bypass an app-specific block as long as general internet is available.
Hide your IP address from WhatsApp: Even in regions without bans, some users prefer that WhatsApp sees the proxy's IP address rather than their own. This does not affect your message encryption but adds an IP-level layer of separation.
Important limitation: A WhatsApp proxy requires some form of internet access to reach the proxy server itself. If your internet is completely shut down, no proxy can help. The proxy only works for network situations where internet is partly available but WhatsApp is specifically blocked.
Not all WhatsApp features function identically through a proxy. Before relying on a proxy in a critical situation, understand what it covers.
Works Through WhatsApp Proxy | Does NOT Work Through WhatsApp Proxy |
Text messages Photos and images Videos Audio and voice messages Documents (PDF, Word, Excel, etc.) Stickers and GIFs Location sharing Contact cards | Voice calls Video calls Note: Meta has confirmed that WhatsApp voice and video calls are not currently supported through the proxy feature. |
Voice and video calls: WhatsApp has confirmed that voice calls and video calls are not currently supported through the proxy feature. If you need to make a voice or video call through a restricted network, a VPN is the practical alternative.

WhatsApp does not provide official proxy servers. Proxies are set up and maintained by volunteers, NGOs, and digital rights organizations. You need to obtain a proxy address from an external source before you can configure it in the app.
Method 1: WhatsApp's official GitHub repository: WhatsApp open-sourced its proxy implementation at github.com/WhatsApp/proxy. This page explains how to run your own proxy, but it also links to community resources where shared proxy addresses are published.
Method 2: Community lists and websites: Tech communities and Reddit users maintain updated lists of active proxy addresses. Search for "WhatsApp proxy list [current year]" on Google or search "WhatsApp proxy" on Reddit. During major outages, volunteers share working proxy addresses rapidly on Twitter/X and Telegram.
Method 3: NGO and digital rights organizations: Organizations such as Access Now run proxy servers specifically to help users in censored regions. If you are in a region that regularly restricts internet access, checking with local or international digital rights groups before an outage gives you proxy addresses to keep on hand.
Method 4: Set up your own proxy server: Advanced users with access to a VPS (virtual private server) in an unrestricted country can run WhatsApp's open-source proxy using Docker, following the instructions on the official GitHub repository. This guarantees you always have access to a working proxy and lets you share the address with others.
A WhatsApp proxy address is either an IP address or a hostname, optionally followed by a port number separated by a colon.
IP address format: 103.152.220.1:443, this tells WhatsApp to connect to the proxy server at IP address 103.152.220.1 on port 443.
Hostname format: proxy.example.com:80, some volunteers use a domain name instead of a raw IP for easier sharing and management.
Common ports for WhatsApp proxy: 80 (standard HTTP), 443 (HTTPS), and 5222 (WhatsApp's native port). If the proxy source does not specify a port, try port 443 or 80. WhatsApp automatically tries to find a valid port if you omit it.
Keep a backup list: Proxy addresses go offline frequently, the server may go down, get overloaded, or get blocked by local ISPs. Always have 2 to 3 alternative proxy addresses saved before you need them.

Make sure your WhatsApp app is updated to the latest version from the Play Store before following these steps. The proxy feature was added in early 2023 and is available in all versions released after that date.
Connection check: The green check mark confirms your phone can reach the proxy server. It does not guarantee that WhatsApp is fully unblocked, if WhatsApp's servers are also unreachable from the proxy's location, messages may still fail. Try a different proxy address if the check mark appears but messages do not send.
Update WhatsApp from the App Store first. The proxy feature is available on all current iOS versions of WhatsApp.
If the first proxy address does not connect, toggle Use Proxy off, re-enable it, and enter a different address. The process of trying multiple addresses is normal, proxy servers have variable uptime.

WhatsApp's built-in proxy feature is available only in the Android and iPhone mobile apps. There is no proxy setting in WhatsApp Web or the WhatsApp Desktop app. WhatsApp Web login works by connecting your browser session to your phone's WhatsApp account. If your phone has proxy enabled, your WhatsApp Web session runs through the same proxied connection as long as your phone is connected.
If your computer is on a restricted network but your phone has proxy enabled and connected, WhatsApp Web on that computer may still work, because the actual WhatsApp connection is processed through your phone, not the computer's internet directly.
If you need to bypass network restrictions on the computer itself (not just WhatsApp), a system-wide VPN on the desktop is the correct tool rather than WhatsApp's mobile-only proxy feature.
Both tools help bypass WhatsApp restrictions, but they work at different levels and serve different use cases.
Feature | WhatsApp Proxy | VPN |
Cost | Free, no subscription needed | Usually paid; free tiers have data or speed limits |
Setup | Built into the WhatsApp app, no extra install | Requires a separate VPN app installation |
Coverage | WhatsApp only | All internet traffic on the device |
Works on WhatsApp Web | No, mobile app only | Yes, works system-wide including desktop browsers |
Voice and video calls | Not supported through proxy | Supported (depends on VPN quality) |
Speed impact | Moderate (single hop through proxy) | Varies by VPN server and protocol |
Message encryption | WhatsApp end-to-end encryption maintained | VPN encryption added on top of WhatsApp encryption |
Best for | Quickly bypassing WhatsApp-specific blocks | Bypassing all internet restrictions on all apps |
Use the WhatsApp proxy when you only need to access WhatsApp and want a free, quick setup. Use a VPN when you need all your apps to work through an unrestricted connection, or when you need voice and video calls.

Proxy check mark appears but messages do not send: The check mark confirms your phone reached the proxy server. If messages still fail, the proxy server may not have a working connection to WhatsApp's servers. Try a different proxy address. This is the most common issue.
No check mark after saving the proxy address: Your phone cannot reach the proxy server at all. Possible causes: the address or port is incorrect (double-check the format), the proxy server is down, or your local internet is blocking access to that server's IP. Try another proxy address or port.
Proxy works but then stops after a few hours: Volunteer-run proxy servers can go offline without notice. Save 2 to 3 backup addresses and rotate to the next one when this happens. Community proxy lists are updated frequently on Reddit and Twitter during active outages.
WhatsApp proxy not working on WhatsApp Web: Expected behavior. The proxy setting only applies to the WhatsApp mobile app. WhatsApp Web does not have its own proxy settings.
Voice calls still failing even with proxy enabled: Also expected. Voice and video calls are not supported through the WhatsApp proxy feature. Use a VPN for calls, or contact the person via text through the proxy-connected session.
The proxy protects your connection at the network routing level but does not replace broader account security practices. Securing your WhatsApp business chats covers account-level and message-level privacy controls that complement the network protection a proxy provides.
Only use proxy addresses from sources you trust: While your message content cannot be read through the proxy due to end-to-end encryption, a malicious proxy operator could log metadata, which IP addresses are connecting and when. Use addresses shared by known organizations or community-vetted sources.
WhatsApp end-to-end encryption is fully maintained: The proxy cannot read your messages, see their content, or intercept media. It only relays encrypted data packets. Your conversations remain as private through a proxy as through a direct connection.
Prepare before a block happens: If you live in or travel to a region that periodically restricts WhatsApp, identify and save proxy addresses before you need them. Finding a working proxy during an active block is significantly harder than having one ready.
Turn off the proxy when not needed: A proxy adds a routing step that can slow connection speeds slightly. When WhatsApp works fine on your direct connection, disable the proxy in Settings > Storage and Data > Proxy for a faster, more direct connection.
Share working proxy addresses with others: If you find a reliable proxy, sharing the address with others in your network directly through WhatsApp (or another channel if WhatsApp is blocked) helps the community stay connected during outages.
WhatsApp's built-in proxy feature is a free, fast, and encryption-preserving way to access WhatsApp when it is blocked on your network. Getting a proxy address is the first step, use community lists, Reddit, Twitter, or set up your own server using WhatsApp's open-source proxy code on GitHub. Then enter the address in WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and Data > Proxy on Android or iPhone.
Remember that voice and video calls do not work through proxy. For full connectivity including calls, a VPN is the right tool. The proxy is the right choice when you only need text messaging, media, and documents restored, with zero cost and a two-minute setup.
For businesses managing outbound WhatsApp campaign sends alongside their connectivity setup, Roklo is a free bulk message sender that handles how to send bulk WhatsApp messages from a browser, no WhatsApp Business API required, no saved contacts needed, no per-message charge.
