Overview: To create a community in WhatsApp Business, open the Communities tab, tap New community, add a name, description, and logo, then add existing groups or create new ones. WhatsApp automatically creates an announcement group where only admins can post, and that message reaches every member across all groups in the community. This guide covers the exact steps on Android, iPhone, and Web, how to structure groups, limits you need to plan around, how to invite members, and what to do if the option is missing.
A community reaches people who joined your groups. To message customers who are not in any group, with each person's name in the message, a WhatsApp bulk message sender free tool handles that from your browser.
Yes. Communities are built into both the WhatsApp Business app and personal WhatsApp, with no API or approval from Meta needed. Any business account on an updated app can create one.
A community is an umbrella that holds several related groups. Members join the groups that matter to them, and you reach everyone at once through a single announcement group.
For a full explanation of how communities work before you build one, see this guide on what a community is in WhatsApp.
Item | Limit |
Community name | Up to 24 characters |
Groups per community | Up to 100 groups, plus the announcement group |
Members per group | Up to 1,024 |
Announcement group members | Up to 5,000 |
Who can post in announcements | Admins only |
Cost | Free in the WhatsApp Business app |
Note: WhatsApp has raised these limits before and may change them again. Check the community info screen in your app for the current numbers.

Tap the Communities tab at the bottom of the screen.

Tap the camera icon to add your logo.
Tap the green arrow.
Tap Add existing groups or Create new group, select the groups, and tap the green tick.
Result: your community is live with its own announcement group and the groups you added.
Open the WhatsApp Business app.
Tap the Communities tab at the bottom.
Tap New Community, then Get Started.

Open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app linked to your business number.
Click the Communities icon at the top of the chat list.
Click New community or the + icon.
Add the name, description, and icon, then click the green arrow.
Add existing groups or create new ones, then confirm.
Result: you can create and manage the community from your computer.
If the option is missing on Web, create the community on your phone first. It will then appear on all linked devices.
The structure decides whether members stay engaged or mute everything. Split groups by what members actually care about.
Business type | Example groups inside the community |
Retail or D2C brand | VIP customers, New arrivals, Feedback, Order help |
Coaching institute | Class 11 batch, Class 12 batch, Parents, Doubt clearing |
Restaurant | Regulars, Catering enquiries, Events |
Real estate | Buyers by city, Investors, Site visit updates |
B2B service | Clients, Partners, Product updates |
Keep each group focused on one topic. A member who only cares about order help should not receive every new-arrival message in their group too.

There is no button that converts a group into a community. Instead, create a new community and add your existing group to it:
Create a new community using the steps above.
When asked to add groups, tap Add existing groups.
Select the group you want to bring in, and confirm.
Result: the group becomes part of the community, and its members are added to the announcement group automatically.
Tip: Post a short message in the group before you move it, explaining what the community is and what members will get. It reduces confusion and exits.
Open your community, tap Invite members, and choose Copy link or Share link. Anyone who taps the link can see the community and request to join the groups inside it.
Share the link on your website, Instagram bio, email signature, receipts, and in store using a QR code. You can also add people directly to a group inside the community, which also adds them to the announcement group.
Group invite links work the same way, and this guide on creating and managing a WhatsApp group link covers resetting links and requiring admin approval.
Every community comes with an announcement group. Only admins can post in it, and every member of every group in the community receives the message. It is the main reason businesses use communities.
Use it for: store-wide offers, new product launches, holiday hours, event dates, and important policy changes.
Avoid: posting daily. Members get a notification for every announcement, and too many leads to muting or leaving.
Expect private replies. Members cannot reply in the announcement group, so they often message you directly. Plan who on your team handles those replies before a big announcement.

Add co-admins. Open the community info, tap the member list, and make trusted team members admins so they can post announcements and approve groups.
Control who adds groups. In community settings, choose whether only admins or all members can add groups. For a business, admin-only keeps the structure clean.
Understand privacy. Members in the announcement group cannot see each other's phone numbers unless they share a group or are saved contacts. Admins' numbers are visible to members, so use a business number, not a personal one.
Remove members or groups. Admins can remove a group from the community or remove a person from the community entirely from the community info screen.
Open the community and tap its name to open Community info.
Scroll down and tap Deactivate community.
Confirm.
Result: the community and its announcement group close, but the groups inside it continue as normal standalone groups.

Outdated app. Update WhatsApp Business from the Play Store or App Store and restart your phone.
Looking in the wrong place. The option sits in the Communities tab, not in New chat or Settings.
Using a linked device. If it does not appear on Web or desktop, create the community on your primary phone.
Account restrictions. Numbers with spam reports or restrictions may lose access to some features until the account is in good standing.
Gradual rollouts. New community features can reach regions at different times. Check again after the next app update.
Creating a community in WhatsApp Business takes a few minutes: open the Communities tab, name it, add your logo, and add or create groups. The real work is the structure. Topic-focused groups and a well-paced announcement group keep members engaged instead of muted.
Use a business number for admins, add co-admins so your team can share the work, and plan who answers the private replies that every announcement brings in.
For customers outside your community, Roklo works as a free bulk message sender that sends personalised messages to your full contact list from your browser.
